“Will you marry me?”

It’s the question that triggers various emotions and begins a chain of events that culminates in a very special wedding. It’s also the question that’s about to get a lot more popular as we head into the holiday season. If you’re one of those couples, congratulations! Now it’s time to make decisions around celebrating, choosing a season, guest count, and budget.

Those four decisions show you how to start planning a wedding without a 12-month checklist on day one.

Just Got Engaged? Now What? Celebrate First

Start your list of what to do after getting engaged with a celebration. You deserve to mark the occasion! News travels quickly (especially during engagement season), so it’s better to get ahead of it. According to The Knot, 76% of couples announce on social media within a day or two of the proposal.

Before you post, decide who hears it from you first:

  • Parents and siblings
  • Grandparents and closest friends
  • Everyone else, online

If you’d like an engagement party, we host them at Union Mills. An open-floor, mix-and-mingle format is the perfect way to mark the journey you’re about to embark on. We offer hourly event rentals, and our brick oven pizza can be part of the menu. It’s just… (chef’s kiss).

Once the news is out, you know the next question waiting in the wings: “When’s the wedding?”

What the Average Engagement Length Means for a Fall Engagement

The date is up to you, but let’s look at some numbers so you know what to expect. The average engagement length for US couples is 15 months, according to The Knot 2025 Real Weddings Study. Say you get engaged today. If you were to have an “average” engagement, you’d be tying the knot between December 2027 and February 2028.

The Knot also tracks engagement season. December is the most popular month to get engaged, with 19% of proposals and nearly 40% of engagements happening between November and February. After all, what’s a better gift than a proposal?

That makes the length of your engagement and the season of your wedding one decision, essentially. Let’s go back to the hypothetical October 2026 engagement:

A table showing engagement lengths and seasons

Engaged in September or November? Shift each window one month earlier or later, and so on.

Picking a row from the above table is the next step in what to do after getting engaged. A shorter engagement puts the wedding in 2027; a longer one gives you more time to plan and save.

Choose Your Wedding Season

We price by season and post our rates on our weddings page, so you can compare windows before you call us. Here’s how each window lines up with our current pricing:

  • Summer 2027: off-peak rates, shortest planning time
  • Fall 2027: peak rates, shorter than the average engagement length
  • Holiday 2027: holiday rates
  • Winter 2028: off-peak rates, close to the 15-month average
  • Spring 2028: peak rates, longest planning time

We’re happy to see so many couples tying the knot, but it does mean venues are booked months in advance. If you’re set on a peak-season date, start touring soon for the widest choice of dates.

Our venue is fully climate-controlled and ADA accessible, and we host weddings year-round. That makes us a wedding venue Frederick, MD couples can book for any season. Inside our historic knitting mill, you’ll find original brick, chandeliers, and views of Carroll Creek. And that’s not to mention the space’s versatility.

Once you’ve chosen a season, the rest of the list builds from it.

Get a Rough Guest Count

Your guest count shapes the size of your venue, the type of rental, and the cost of catering. A range is enough for now. Specifics will come into focus the closer you get to your wedding day. Part of how to start planning a wedding is setting upper and lower limits:

  • At minimum: immediate family, wedding party, closest friends
  • At most: everyone you’d like to invite

Plan around that range until you’re ready to build the final list. Thanks to that Union Mills versatility we mentioned earlier, we can host everything from micro-weddings to 250-guest celebrations. Half- and full-day rentals are available. Micro-weddings get the same elegance and amenities as our larger weddings.

Set a Budget You Both Agree On

Budgeting is the last main step, and it’s dependent on the season and guest count. Before you tour, agree on a total and on who’s contributing.

We keep our pricing transparent so you can budget with real numbers. Every wedding package includes our liquor license, tables, chairs, and full-service kitchen. The booking price covers place settings, glassware, and serving pieces. Food, beverage, and staffing are separate, as they depend heavily on guest count.

For in-house catering, plan on roughly $180 per guest. For 100 guests, that’s about $18,000. We customize every menu at no extra charge, though different choices carry different costs. After you book your date, we build your catering proposal and adjust it to your final guest count and timeline.

Line items to plan for from the start:

  • Venue rental
  • Catering and bar service
  • Day-of coordinator
  • Linens
  • Taxes

We require a day-of coordinator for every wedding, and our preferred vendors list is a good place to find one. A longer engagement also gives you more months to save.
