If you’ve found this website, you’ve probably at least heard of Frederick, Maryland. With a rich history and plenty of notable landmarks—like the Baker Park Belltower—it’s become something of Maryland’s crown jewel—one that gets shinier with each passing year. In recent years, municipal groups and volunteers have poured their hearts and souls into enhancing various public spaces around the city, as well as making other efforts to bolster the local economy. One of the allures of this charming city is the variety of activities it offers. Today, we’re stepping outside the doors of Union Mills to discuss all the things to do in Frederick MD!
Explore the Historic District
There are plenty of modern marvels in these storied streets. More on those later, but let’s start at the beginning. The downtown in the city we love to call home features 50 blocks of beautifully preserved architecture. The architecture alone is enough to be impressed by, but it goes deeper than that. Several sites in the area—like the Schifferstadt Architectural Museum—take you through the history of the spaces and let you peek into the past, to see how various parts of Frederick came to be.
If you’re feeling particularly patriotic, a visit to the Mt. Olivet Cemetery may be in order. After all, that’s where Francis Scott Key, author of the Star Spangled Banner, is buried.
Relax at Baker Park
We wouldn’t fault you for needing a little break from the downtown scene. There are so many things to do in Frederick MD that it can get a little intimidating. Luckily, we know just the spot! A short walk will get you to Baker Park, a sprawling 58-acre space that has something for everyone. Stroll along the footpaths that extend from end to end of this park, taking in the sights as you go. Don’t forget to relax at a bench and enjoy the scenery of Culler Lake!
In the warmer months, you can catch a concert at the band shell (just a stone’s throw from the aforementioned Belltower) and enjoy other seasonal events that take place in the large grassy lawn. Of course, our children have different priorities than we do. They may not be as invested in historical beauty, but the playgrounds in Baker Park should keep them occupied. There are even some “dinosaur bones” to climb on!
Catch a Show at the Weinberg Center for the Arts
Originally a movie theater from 1926, the Weinberg Center is a fantastic facilitator of culture and entertainment that’s just off of Market Street. It’s more than just motion pictures that are shown here, too. This multi-purpose venue hosts shows of all kinds, including:
- Plays
- Concerts
- Comedy Shows
- Classic films
- And more!
Hike Sugarloaf Mountain
In addition to an abundance of historical value, there are plenty of opportunities to nurture our inner adventurers in the Frederick area, as well. One such opportunity is Sugarloaf Mountain. It’s just a short drive away, and offers a much needed connection with nature. Various picnic spots make it a great place for the whole family to go and relax, and the numerous hiking trails are perfect for the more active-minded. And just wait till you reach the summit. Nothing beats that view!
Discover Your New Favorite Brewery
The craft beer scene has exploded across the country in recent years, and this city is all-in! It’s currently one of the most popular things to do in Frederick MD, and for good reason. There are plenty of breweries around town that have established themselves through atmosphere, community, and of course, good beer. Rockwell Brewery and Attaboy Beer are just a couple of these hotspots. You’ll just have to visit the city if you want the whole experience!
Tour the Frederick Wine Trail
Of course, beer isn’t everyone’s preferred beverage. Some social drinkers are more wine-inclined, and there’s plenty for you to indulge in, as well! The Frederick Wine Trail features local vineyards that offer unique flavors, beautiful vineyards, and gorgeous public hangout spots.
- Sample reds, whites, and even specialty wines to your heart’s content.
- Take in the views of sprawling vineyards and rolling hills.
- Enjoy live music and other seasonal events, supported by beloved local food trucks.
